What is aquatainment?

Aquatainment, a combination of two words “aquaculture” and “entertainment”, is an educative way of exploring the potentials of aquaculture in Ghana. The name is coined by FISHWAYS SOLUTIONS LIMITED, Ghana as a means of entertaining people from different walks of life with an eye on developing their interest in aquaculture.

About Aquatainment

Aquatainment is a quarterly program organised by Fishways Solutions Limited for the businessmen and investors to explore and have a real fish farming experience. This program seeks to provide a platform for potential fish farmers and also help the working class appreciate fish farming as a venture worth investing. As part of our activities, Fishways Solutions Limited takes participants for sightseeing on the lake and also to stocked cages and ponds. In order not make the trip boring, there are other activities which are available for those who don’t have much interest in fish farming but would want to visit the facility to take time off his/her busy schedules from work.

Why Aquatainment?

Fish farming is one of the most lucrative agricultural businesses across the globe. Ghana is one of the most consumers of fish especially tilapia because of its delicacy.

According to statistics, Ghana’s fish import stands at a whopping 2 million dollars with annual demand of 880,000 tonnes out of which only 42,000 tonnes is produced locally. Although the banned of fish imports is an avenue to create wealth and reduce unemployment, less efforts have been made to harness the business opportunity in the sector.

Aquatainment is one of the tools used to explore the beauty and encourage investors. It is a means to equip and update people with the current trends in the industry. Fishing trips in a form of entertainment is an “art” because it comprises of the science, business and skills employed in fish farming.

THE ADVENTURES OF ULTIMATE FEED

    The production of fish in Ghana has risen in recent years in response to the growing demand of fish in the country and the world at large. A recent study suggests that farmed seafood will need to increase over 130% by 2050 in order to meet projected worldwide demand. This forecast is estimated by considering ideal situation: Quality fish feed and good fish feed management.

Feeding fish with the right feed and observing good fish feed management does not only yield desirable marketable fish sizes but also helps to control the environmental impact the feed poses on aquatic habitat.
 Good fish feed reduces overall cost; improves fish farms environment; promotes rapid growth of fish; and ensure healthy fish stock. Other practices which when observed will help attain better yield at harvest includes:

•         Choosing the right feed  ~ ultimate feed
•         Using the recommended feeding method
•         Make economic projections of the feeding cost
•         Ensuring the cost effectiveness of fish farm

        Fish feed is a major expenditure for fish farmers and forms about 70% of the production cost. What then should this inform a fish farmer? the farmer has to feed their fish with better feed: ultimate feed.

The feed

        A farmer once asked, “what’s the secret to sizes of harvested catfish fish?” ,my response was just brief-it’s just the adventures of ultimate feed. Ultimate feed amongst many fish feeds has an edge over others because:

•        It has high quality fish meal
•         Promotes rapid growth                                                                                   Physiologically, the above qualities of ultimate feed helps the development of the fish astronomically which gives the fish farmer desirable results.Economically, ultimate feed comes at a relatively lower cost to other feeds. On these grounds, the fish farmer does not only record desired FCR but also makes economic gains.  On another sphere,is  an aspect most fish feeds failed to address is the ecological impact the fish feed pose to the water environment. Protein and fat levels

        The quality of fish feed is determined by a balanced in protein and fat levels. Feed formulators produce feed in response to the demand of protein to fat levels according to the market. It must be understood that high levels of crude proteins in feeds do not always lead to desired marketable fish size at harvest, however only portions which are convertible are used to build cells for growth.

        Sometimes, it’s very surprising that some fish farmers demand high crude proteins as far as 52/14 starters for tilapia fingerlings. No! This perception must be erased since it comes with additional feed cost.
